Keychain is a service of the Mac OS X operating system which allows you to create a key, by storing data in the Keychain, and then later retrieve the data, using the key.
For example, let's say you need to create a keychain named "Test" for storing your login information, the file name and path of the application and the username.
You could create the keychain like this:
1) Open Keychain Access, and create a new key by choosing the "Create Key" item from the "Keychain Access" menu.
2) Give the new key a name. For example, "Test".
3) For the purpose of this tutorial, we want to store a file, located at ~/Users/test.txt, in the file.
4) In the Value for File input box, type ~/Users/test.txt.
5) In the Key for File input box, type the characters "test" (case does not matter).
6) Enter the Passphrase for Keychain as it is for security purposes (we will discuss this more in the next steps).
7) Check the "Show password in keychain item" checkbox.
8) Click OK.
9) The key is now created and you can see it in the list of keys in Keychain Access.
Now, let's say you want to create a new keychain for storing the same data.
1) Open Keychain Access, and choose the "Create Key" item from the "Keychain Access" menu.
2) Choose "New Keychain" in the input box, and enter a key name. For example, "NewTest".
3) For the purpose of this tutorial, we want to store a file, located at ~/Users/test.txt, in the file.
4) In the Value for File input box, type ~/Users/test.txt.
5) In the Key for File input box, enter the characters "test" (case does not matter).
6) Enter the Passphrase for Keychain as it is for security purposes (we will discuss this more in the next steps).
7) Click OK.
8) The key is now created and you can see it in the list of keys in Keychain Access.
